House Democrats accuse Trump of ‘hijacking’ America’s 250th birthday for his own gain
House Democrats Criticize Trump's Role in 250th Anniversary Celebrations
House Democrats accuse Trump of hijacking - With the nation gearing up to commemorate its 250th anniversary, a contentious dispute has emerged over the organization overseeing these events. House Democrats have launched an investigation into the activities of Freedom 250, a public-private group tasked with hosting the festivities, alleging that it has been used to advance President Donald Trump’s political interests at the expense of a unified national celebration.
Report Unveils Allegations of Corruption and Partisan Influence
On Thursday, the House Natural Resources Committee released a 55-page report accusing Freedom 250 of orchestrating a campaign that has transformed the 250th anniversary into a "hotbed of corruption and self-enrichment." The document claims the group has leveraged its position to promote a Trump-centric agenda, employing tactics that may qualify as criminal fraud. Titled "From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday," the report highlights concerns about the group’s transparency and its ability to manipulate public perception.
Rep. Jared Huffman, a California Democrat and the committee’s top critic, stated the report was the result of extensive research and interviews with anonymous sources. "This was a team of operatives using the Freedom 250 shell company, but it was also Donald Trump himself telling them what to do," Huffman explained in a Zoom interview. He emphasized that the organization’s actions were not merely partisan but had the potential to exploit the nation’s shared history for political gain.
"We put it all together to really tell the story … of how Donald Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying national celebration and repurposed it for his own interests," Huffman said. "The events were meant to honor our country, but instead, they became a vehicle for his extreme agenda."
The White House has yet to formally comment on the allegations, though it referred the inquiry to Freedom 250 for clarification. The group, however, maintains it operates independently of the administration, asserting it does not represent the White House’s views. Despite this, the report accuses the organization of aligning closely with Trump’s team to shape the narrative around the anniversary.
Freedom 250’s Public Events and Hidden Tactics
Freedom 250 has been responsible for several high-profile events during the summer, including a UFC match outside the White House, a state fair on the National Mall, and a fireworks display that began with a Trump rally. One of its upcoming initiatives, the "Patriot Games," a high school athletic competition scheduled for August, has drawn particular scrutiny for its perceived alignment with Trump’s political brand.
The report claims these events were designed to blur the line between celebration and political messaging. It describes the group as a "shadow organization capable of infiltrating the celebrations and injecting America's 250th with Trump's extreme, partisan agenda," according to the committee’s findings. Critics argue that the events, while festive, have been used to promote a narrow ideological perspective, overshadowing the broader significance of the milestone.
Freedom 250 was established through an executive order last year, positioning itself as a "national, non-partisan organization leading the celebration of our Nation's 250th birthday." Yet, its creation came after Congress formed a separate, nonpartisan commission called America250 in 2016 to manage the anniversary events. The committee claims Trump’s team disregarded this existing body, opting instead to create their own entity to control the message.
Opaque Funding and Political Ties
Democratic watchdog groups and critics have pointed to the group’s funding practices as evidence of its partisan alignment. The report alleges that Freedom 250 has engaged in questionable financial maneuvers, such as soliciting foreign contributions and misleading donors into believing they were supporting the America250 commission. In some cases, donors were provided with banking details for Freedom 250, unaware they were funding a separate entity.
Huffman detailed how these tactics allowed Trump’s allies to consolidate power over the celebrations. "Once you siphon off the funds and supplant the real bipartisan commission with this new entity, and you award all these shady contracts to your friends, you can do anything you want," he said. The report suggests that this manipulation has enabled the group to inject a heavily religious tone into its programming, with events like the "Great American State Fair" and a prayer gathering on the National Mall criticized for their sanitized historical narratives and overt Christian emphasis.
"These folks chose to do was to push a very divisive, very extreme and explicitly sectarian religious agenda into all these materials in our name, using our taxpayer dollars," Huffman added.
Freedom 250, however, has dismissed these accusations. Spokesperson Danielle Alvarez called the report "categorically false," framing it as a "partisan smear" aimed at undermining the organization’s efforts. "Congressional members should be ashamed they are spending countless hours fabricating a report instead of joining Americans in creating an absolutely beautiful celebration," she wrote in a statement shared with NPR.
Committee’s Oversight and Legal Concerns
The report has not been officially endorsed by the Natural Resources Committee, leaving it as a critical analysis rather than a formal finding. While Democrats have raised concerns in previous hearings, Republican members have yet to take decisive action. Rep. Bruce Westerman, the committee’s Republican ranking member, did not respond to NPR’s request for comment, further highlighting the political divide over the issue.
Huffman noted that his team had faced consistent resistance in obtaining information from Freedom 250 over the past year. "They obstructed our efforts to uncover the truth every step of the way," he said. The report’s findings include claims that the group’s financial practices could violate federal laws, such as wire fraud, if donors were misled into believing they were supporting the America250 commission when they were actually funding Freedom 250.
Despite the controversy, Freedom 250 maintains its focus on commemorating the nation’s history. The group’s leadership argues that the events it organizes have brought national unity and pride, contrasting with the Democrats’ view of them as politically motivated. The debate over the group’s legitimacy underscores broader tensions between partisan interests and the public’s expectations for impartial commemoration.
