Inside Joe Manchin’s new quest to elect more Independents to Congress
Manchin's Vision for Independent Politics Takes Shape
Ecorescuezone.com – Joe Manchin, the former senator from West Virginia, is stepping into a fresh political endeavor. More than eighteen months after departing his Senate seat, the Democrat-turned-independent is dedicating himself to a mission centered on independent voices in Washington. His goal? To help elect more independent representatives to Congress through a newly formed coalition.
The political landscape has shifted dramatically under the current system, according to Manchin. He argues that partisan polarization has created barriers that prevent elected officials from bridging divides regardless of their party affiliation.
"The way the parties have weaponized the political process today, they make it impossible to have a 'D' or an 'R' next to your name and speak to the other side," said the former senator.
A New Coalition for Independent Candidates
Working alongside his daughter Heather Manchin, the former senator has established the Independent Leadership Council. This initiative merges two complementary organizations: Americans Together, led by Heather, and the Independent Center, which focuses on research and engagement with independent voters. Together, they aim to build infrastructure that independent candidates have historically lacked.
"This is not about a third party. This is about people running outside the two party system," Heather Manchin explained to NPR. "We're willing to go out there and campaign, we're going to be fundraising, we're going to put our arms around this effort to do all we can, because the infrastructure for independents lacks significantly."
The formal announcement occurred on Friday at the Greenbrier Resort, a historic venue in West Virginia known for its Cold War-era underground bunker capable of sheltering all members of Congress during a nuclear emergency. Approximately forty attendees gathered for the event, including prominent donors, advocates for political reform, and several independent candidates seeking support.
Addressing Systemic Challenges
Rep. Kevin Kiley of California, who transitioned from the Republican Party to independent status in March, attended the gathering. He expressed concern about growing political divisions and congressional gridlock.
"Clearly, we haven't had the worst happen as was envisioned by the bunker, but I think many of the fears of our founders about the harm of a deeply entrenched two-party system have come to pass," said Rep. Kevin Kiley, one of the candidates in attendance.
"The division is getting worse, the polarization is getting worse, the gridlock in Congress is getting worse. So I think there is a dawning realization among more and more people that we need to chart a different course," Kiley said.
Independent candidates have traditionally faced significant obstacles, particularly regarding fundraising capabilities and organizational support compared to their party-affiliated counterparts. The Greenbrier meeting provided an opportunity for eight independent candidates to connect directly with potential donors.
"The candidates needed to know that they could trust people to believe in their vision as an independent candidate, and funders and donors needed to trust that there was going to be an actionable plan that would really turn out results in November," said Seth Cohen, a senior adviser at the Independent Center and one of the co-founders of the Independent Leadership Council.
Data-Driven Strategy and Growing Support
The initiative relies heavily on data analytics developed by the Independent Center. Using artificial intelligence, the organization identifies congressional districts where independent candidates demonstrate the strongest prospects for success.
"We have to show that it's not just that we have a good strategy, but that the strategy can win," said Adam Brandon, another senior adviser at the Independent Center. "This isn't about a moral victory – this is about winning. And so we had to show that every candidate we had here has a path to victory."
Brandon, who recently closed FreedomWorks—the conservative grassroots organization instrumental in elevating Tea Party activists—connected with the Manchins and championed the concept of independent politics as a viable alternative.
"Good people go to Washington and the system grinds them up," he said. "You have to break free and only independents can do that."
Brandon referenced the Field of Dreams principle, noting that fundraising momentum is already building following the retreat.
"We have over eight figures in commitments," said Brandon. "So that means we're going to be able to go and actually start supporting some of these candidates. You're going to see viable independent candidates in the field in America really for the first time in my lifetime."
The Manchins remain strategic in their approach, avoiding mass endorsements while focusing on demonstrating proof of concept.
"We're not out here saying, we're going to run 50 people," Heather Manchin said. "We're talking about a handful. If we can show one or two getting in, it just unlocks the untapped potential of giving independents a voice in this country."
Recent polling data underscores the growing independent movement. A Gallup survey conducted earlier this year revealed that 45 percent of Americans identified as political independents in 2025. Additionally, 2024 exit polls indicated that 34 percent of voters identified as independent, representing a notable increase from 26 percent in 2020. These figures suggest that the Manchin initiative aligns with broader electoral trends toward independent political identity.
