Watching children interact with Tickle Me Elmo, she noticed how pressing the plush toy's belly triggered it to speak and teach. This simple mechanism sparked an idea: why couldn't Indigenous children have similar toys that taught their ancestral languages rather than just English?

"There are toys that teach us in English, but there aren't toys that teach us Anishinaabemowin," Boyer explained. "And I wanted that to be different."

A Language on the Brink

Anishinaabemowin encompasses three distinct but related languages: Potawatomi, Odawa, and Ojibwe. While precise numbers fluctuate, fewer than 10,000 individuals in the United States currently speak Anishinaabemowin. Canada's speaker population sits approximately at 25,000. Some Native languages face even more precarious situations, with merely dozens of fluent speakers remaining, and certain languages have lost all native speakers entirely.

Boyer, a 25-year-old member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, has witnessed firsthand how rapidly languages can disappear. Her grandmother remains one of the final fluent speakers of their specific dialect.

"It is devastating to feel like your language could be lost," said Boyer. "You lose your culture, you lose a way to describe who you are."

The historical trauma inflicted by U.S. Indian boarding schools significantly accelerated Indigenous language decline. Children were forcibly separated from their families and, in some cases violently, discouraged from speaking their mother tongues. Many survivors never passed their languages to subsequent generations.

The SkoBot Innovation

Recognizing that contemporary Native youth often view language learning as merely another academic obligation, Boyer developed the SkoBot. This shoulder-mounted robot resembles a miniature R2-D2 but features woodland creature aesthetics adorned with Native American floral patterns.

Through a nonprofit organization she founded at age 18, Boyer has guided hundreds of Indigenous children nationwide in constructing their own SkoBots. The robots employ artificial intelligence to vocalize Indigenous languages while avoiding the pitfalls of generative AI that can produce inaccurate information.

"Basically when it hears that one trigger word, it then plays a prerecorded audio file. So there isn't synthetic speech, there isn't any generative AI," Boyer clarified. "It's simply listening to what you're saying, identifying it and playing that already exist."

A Young Inventor's Vision

Holden Hoy, a 12-year-old Ojibwe student at JKL Bahweting Anishinaabe School in Sault Ste. Marie, represents the next generation of language preservationists. Also a member of the Sault Tribe, Hoy demonstrated his SkoBot at his school's year-end science fair.

"I was already a big fan of robotics and how they work, how you can bring inanimate objects to life," Hoy shared. "And I'm Ojibwe, and so I've always wanted to save the Ojibwe language."

Hoy programmed his robot to respond to three predetermined questions. When asked its name, the SkoBot replied in Hoy's own voice: "Aaniin, Hello. Sabe indizhinikaaz, Bahweting indoonjibaa. I was built by Holden Hoy. I will not gain sentience and take over the world. Or will I?"

He named his creation Sabe, meaning Bigfoot in Anishinaabemowin. Within Ojibwe tradition, Bigfoot embodies honesty, one of seven sacred teachings.

Sabe features a single eye equipped with a movement sensor that activates its listening capability. When triggered by a specific word, the robot retrieves and plays corresponding prerecorded audio files.

"I'm very happy that people are actually coming to this booth," Hoy expressed. "I'm happy that they are learning things, and I'm really happy that I'm part of the Ojibwe."

Beyond Language Preservation

Boyer envisions the SkoBot as more than a language tool. She hopes to inspire children to explore science, mathematics, and engineering while developing ethical perspectives on artificial intelligence.

"Artificial intelligence, especially when it's not created by Indigenous people, stands to do a lot of harm to our communities," she noted. "When you are putting accurate information into these models … you're giving away sacred in"

By combining traditional knowledge with modern technology, Boyer and young innovators like Hoy are creating pathways for Indigenous languages to thrive in contemporary society. Their work ensures that future generations will have tools to maintain their linguistic heritage while engaging with the technological world around them.
