Pep Guardiola reacts as Leeds United fans boo Ramadan break
During Saturday’s Premier League encounter between Leeds United and Manchester City, certain fans at Elland Road voiced discontent over the Ramadan fast-break taken by three players. The incident occurred as the match paused briefly at sunset, allowing Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Omar Marmoush to consume food and water before resuming play.
Referee Peter Bankes initiated the stoppage in the 12th minute, accommodating the players’ need to break their fast. However, the short interruption was greeted with boos and sarcastic chants from a segment of the crowd, highlighting lingering tensions around religious practices in football.
“It’s the modern world, right? Look what’s happening in the world right now today again, right?” said Guardiola, addressing the backlash from some Leeds supporters.
The Barcelona manager added: “It’s a rule. The Premier League decided it’s acceptable for players to fast and have one or two minutes to break it. We didn’t say it—so the players do it. It is what it is, unfortunately.”
Leeds assistant manager expresses disappointment
Edmund Riemer, Leeds’ assistant manager, acknowledged the incident but focused on the game itself. “I’m concentrating on the match, so I don’t really hear it,” he explained. “Still, I’m disappointed with some fans for their reaction.”
Kick It Out highlights ongoing issues
Kick It Out issued a statement condemning the behavior: “It’s deeply disappointing that some Leeds United fans booed Manchester City’s players as they broke their fast during the first half at Elland Road. This was worsened by the fact that an explanation was shown on stadium screens.”
They noted: “The practice of pausing matches to let Muslim players fast during Ramadan has been a standard protocol for years. It’s a vital step in making football inclusive for Muslim communities. Yet, tonight’s response shows there’s still progress to be made in awareness and acceptance.”
