Football Rally in Peru Leaves One Fan Dead, Dozens Injured
A tragic event occurred during a pre-match gathering at a football derby in Lima, Peru, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. Peruvian Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero confirmed the death at a hospital in the city, stating that 47 individuals were affected, with three in critical condition. The incident took place at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, where fans had assembled in support of Alianza Lima, wearing team jerseys and waving flags ahead of a showdown against their local rivals, Universitario de Deportes.
Initial reports suggested parts of the stadium’s wall or structure may have collapsed, but this has since been challenged by officials. Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo asserted that the southern stands were structurally sound, noting,
“There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit.”
The football league announced that Saturday night’s match would proceed as scheduled, emphasizing its dedication to ensuring the safety of spectators.
Earlier, the interior ministry shared on X that 40 firefighters had responded to an emergency involving individuals trapped within a stadium structure. However, Alianza Lima later clarified on X that the incident was unrelated to the collapse of walls or structural elements of the venue. The league reiterated its commitment to safety in a statement, stating that authorities are probing the circumstances of the rally.
