Four Arrested Over Murder of Scottish Businessman in Kenya
Authorities in Kenya have detained four individuals in relation to the killing of Campbell Scott, a 58-year-old Scottish businessman. His body was discovered in a sack within Makongo Forest, approximately 60 miles (96.5 km) from Nairobi, where he had been staying. The arrest followed a coordinated operation in Ukunda, a coastal town 16 miles (25.8 km) south of Mombasa.
The suspects were linked to both the murder and a separate violent robbery involving an American national in Nyali, near Mombasa. This probe led to the identification of additional individuals connected to the case. Scott, from Dunfermline in Fife, was a senior director at FICO, a credit scoring firm, and had traveled to Nairobi for a conference before his disappearance.
Scott went missing after failing to meet colleagues at the JW Marriott Hotel in Nairobi’s Westlands district. He was last seen at Havana nightclub the previous evening. Kenyan police later indicated they believed he was transported to a property in the Pipeline district, a slum area roughly 9.3 miles (15 km) from his hotel. Prosecutors suspect he was detained there to access his financial accounts.
A post-mortem examination yielded inconclusive results, though pathologists noted the injuries were too minor to account for his death. Initially, two men—a taxi driver and a nightclub waiter—were questioned, believed to be the last people to see Scott alive. Two were arrested in March last year, with one appearing in court charged with murder. A search for more suspects was then launched.
“An operation was conducted by DCI officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CR&IB) Headquarters, working alongside SCCIO Nyali and SCCIO Msambweni (Ukunda) teams,” stated Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). “The suspects, Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki, and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge, were apprehended at Ideal Apartments in Ukunda. They are also connected to a robbery with violence in Watamu, Malindi Sub-County. Stolen goods, including an HP laptop, mobile phones, and foreign currencies, were recovered from their residence.”
