Trump warns that UK trade deal ‘can always be changed’
Trump States UK Trade Agreement Remains Flexible
US President Donald Trump highlighted that the trade pact with the United Kingdom is subject to revision, stating it was a favorable arrangement. During an interview with Sky News on Wednesday, he remarked, “We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to,” when reflecting on the bilateral relationship.
Criticism of Starmer’s Approach
Since late February, Trump has repeatedly expressed disapproval of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, particularly after the latter opted not to support the US-Israel conflict against Iran. Despite this, Trump acknowledged that the relationship had “been better” but insisted it would not overshadow the significance of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming state visit to the United States.
Recent Strains in Bilateral Relations
When asked to define the special relationship, Trump initially responded with a question, then clarified: “It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. When we didn’t need them, they were not there. And they still aren’t there.” He later added, “It’s been better, but it’s sad,” while emphasizing the trade deal’s malleability.
Historical Context of Trade Deal
In May of the previous year, the UK secured the first tariff agreement with Trump following his return to the presidency, reducing import duties on vehicles, aluminium, and steel. This development contrasted with recent tensions, which have arisen over the Middle East. Trump has frequently lambasted Starmer’s stance, once labeling him “no Winston Churchill.”
Anticipation for Royal Visit
Trump insisted that the current dynamics would not diminish the importance of the royal state visit in late April. “I’ve known the King for a long time, and he’s not involved in that process,” he said. When asked what he looked forward to, he replied, “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful.” Earlier in the conversation, he expressed liking for Starmer but criticized his immigration and energy policies as “insane.”
