EastEnders legend makes very unexpected return after 8 years

Spoilers for EastEnders’ Monday episode (March 16) are now available on BBC iPlayer.

Keeping a return secret is a welcome surprise, and EastEnders fans experienced that firsthand as they watched the latest episode on BBC iPlayer.

As Mother’s Day unfolded in Walford, Peter Beale (Thomas Law) surprised his wife Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) with a memorable event at 45 Albert Square, which turned out to be anything but ordinary.

Lauren’s joy was palpable, and fans likely shared her excitement, as Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell) made an unexpected appearance, surprising her granddaughter with her sudden return.

As I expect the fans were too.

The beloved character, last seen in the Square in 2018, has long been a fan favorite, especially as the Branning family’s story has regained momentum over the past year.

Cora’s presence quickly stirred up the typical Walford chaos, with her arrival at the dinner table sparking a whirlwind of gossip and tension.

Max Branning (Jake Wood) was notably irked by his ex-mother-in-law’s sudden return, as he challenged her but Cora skillfully defended herself, confronting him over past misdeeds.

Meanwhile, Lauren continued to recover from last week’s attack, masterminded by Mark Fowler Jr (Stephen Aaron-Sipple), though she remained unaware of its true nature.

Cora advised Lauren to stay strong despite the attack, prompting her to consider Mark Fowler Jr’s offer, which leaves her contemplating its potential consequences.

However, Mark Fowler Jr’s smug demeanor in the next scene suggests he’s plotting something again, raising questions about whether this deal will backfire for Lauren.

Cora departed after the Mother’s Day event, but not before reconnecting with her grandson Oscar (Pierre Counihan-Moullier) in a heartfelt reunion.

The embrace reminded Ian (Adam Woodyatt) of his gran Lou (Anna Wing), who passed away in 1988.

Have we seen the last of Cora? Or will she return again in the future? We’ll just have to wait and see but what an unexpected treat it was to have her back in the Square, if even for a flying visit.
