Coachella kicks off with Sabrina Carpenter and surprise guests
The Coachella music festival began on Friday with an unexpected twist, as pop star Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining set welcomed actor Susan Sarandon as a surprise guest. Sarandon took the stage during Carpenter’s performance, delivering a monologue in character as a more mature version of the 26-year-old singer. The Hollywood-themed event also featured comedian Will Ferrell and actor Sam Elliott, who joined Carpenter in a creative narrative unfolding on the main stage.
During her opening act, Carpenter transformed the Empire Polo Club grounds into a cinematic scene, incorporating a short film where she was pulled over by Elliott while driving at night. After a brief interaction, she emerged onto the stage, setting the tone for her performance. Later, Ferrell made an appearance in a playful role as an electrician, adding humor to the festival’s lineup.
Weather forecasts warned of strong winds and airborne dust, prompting the cancellation of DJ Anyma’s set following Carpenter’s performance. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival shared a statement on Instagram:
“Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform tonight. Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”
Wind gusts were projected to reach up to 25 miles per hour, leading to disruptions in the festival’s schedule.
Although the Coachella Valley was under an air quality advisory from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning, local officials noted that particulate levels remained within acceptable ranges. “Particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections,” the National Weather Service cautioned. The advisory, however, did not significantly impact overall air quality, which was classified as good to moderate after noon on Thursday.
Friday’s lineup also included global girl group KATSEYE and British artist Disclosure. On Saturday, Justin Bieber will take the stage as the headliner, followed by Karol G on Sunday. A roster of UK-based performers, such as Wet Leg, Lambrini Girls, Little Simz, and FKA Twigs, will join the festivities. The line-ups will repeat during the following weekend, ensuring a consistent flow of entertainment for attendees.
