Melania Trump says rumours linking her to Epstein ‘need to stop’
Melania Trump has refuted allegations of ties to Jeffrey Epstein, stating that claims connecting the two “must cease immediately” during a press briefing at the White House. In an unexpected move, she urged Congress to hold hearings for Epstein’s alleged victims, emphasizing the need for public accountability. She also dismissed rumors that Epstein had introduced her to her husband, Donald Trump, calling them “insulting efforts to harm my image.”
There is no clear explanation for her abrupt decision to address the issue. Her team had not previously signaled a statement on Epstein, and the White House omitted the topic when compiling the day’s agenda. Trump claimed she had only “briefly encountered” Epstein in 2000, asserting she was not a victim and had no role in his activities. “I have no awareness of Epstein’s abuse of his victims,” she stated. “I was never involved in any way. I was not a participant.”
She further denied familiarity with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s imprisoned associate. Referring to a 2002 email between herself and Maxwell, she described it as “simple correspondence” and a “courteous reply.” The email, directed to “G” (likely Maxwell), praised a photo of “JE” from New York Magazine and expressed anticipation for a trip to Palm Beach. The magazine piece featured quotes from then-President Donald Trump, who called Epstein a “great guy” and noted, “he’s a lot of fun to be with.” He also remarked, “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them on the younger side.”
“It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them on the younger side,” he was quoted as saying. “No doubt about it – Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”
California Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, a leading member of the House Oversight Committee, echoed Trump’s demand for a hearing in a statement shortly after her remarks. “We concur with Melania Trump’s call for a public hearing,” Garcia said. “We urge Chairman Comer to act swiftly and schedule a hearing at once,” he added, referencing committee head James Comer.
The first lady’s comments are expected to intensify discussions about the Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein case and the subsequent disclosure of his records. While Trump acknowledged knowing Epstein, he later claimed to have removed him from his Palm Beach club due to his “creepy” behavior. Despite frequent mentions in the files, no evidence of misconduct against him was found.
