NYPD Officer Dies in Medical Incident During Deployment in Iran Conflict
New York City police officer Major Sorffly Davius succumbed to his injuries while stationed in Kuwait as part of the U.S. military’s efforts in the ongoing war with Iran, officials confirmed. The death occurred at Camp Buehring, where Davius was serving during a joint operation. Governor Kathy Hochul shared the news in a statement, highlighting Davius’s commitment to service. “Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” the NYPD added in a separate announcement.
Davius had previously served in the U.S. Army National Guard with the 42nd Infantry Division, attaining the rank of major. Before his overseas assignment, he was a dedicated member of the NYPD, working in the 79th Precinct since 2014. The department emphasized his dual role as both a law enforcement officer and a military veteran. “His life is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our National Guard members,” Hochul noted, describing Davius as a “true Citizen Soldier” who balanced responsibilities as a husband, father, and first responder.
“His career was defined by service — to his country and to New York City,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a statement Saturday.
According to U.S. Central Command, the war on Iran has resulted in seven U.S. service members losing their lives. Six of them perished in Kuwait, while the seventh died Saturday evening from wounds sustained in a March 1 attack on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia. NBC News has contacted the National Guard and Central Command for further details. Marlene Lenthang, a breaking news reporter for NBC News Digital, reported the developments.
