Seven Arrested at Base Demonstration Accused of Supporting Banned Group
Suffolk Police reported that seven individuals were detained on Sunday during a protest at Lakenheath airbase, suspected of backing the Palestine Action group. The arrests occurred near the main entrance of the base, where demonstrators gathered to oppose military actions in the Iran conflict. The protest was sparked by media reports claiming a US fighter jet shot down in Iran had been stationed at the facility.
The group of five men and two women was taken to the Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further inquiry. A police statement noted the arrests were made “on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation.” It also emphasized the force’s commitment to enforcing laws impartially, stating that decisions on legal action depend on current evidence rather than potential future scenarios.
“Suffolk Police has a duty to enforce the law without fear or favour and as it currently stands, not as it might be in the future. As such, where offences are believed to have occurred appropriate action will be taken.”
Meanwhile, the High Court had previously ruled the proscription of Palestine Action unlawful in February, yet the Home Office retained the authority to challenge that decision. This left the ban active until the appeal concludes. The ongoing peace camp, which includes a round-the-clock vigil, is set to conclude on Monday.
“The arrests happened after retired colonel Chris Romberg delivered a speech to the protesters,” stated the Lakenheath Alliance For Peace.
Suffolk Police also confirmed that two participants faced charges of highway obstruction following a blockade set up on Saturday. The incident underscores the tensions between demonstrators and authorities at the base.
