Watch: Moment gunman tackled by school principal

CCTV footage captures a tense scene at Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma, where a principal confronted an active shooter during a chaotic incident on 7 April. The assailant, identified as Victor Hawkins, entered the school and opened fire before being subdued by Principal Kirk Moore. Moore charged at Hawkins, managing to wrestle the weapon from his grasp. A second staff member then assisted in disarming the individual. Despite sustaining a leg injury during the confrontation, Moore was later released from the hospital. Hawkins was arrested on the scene and now faces charges including unlawful carrying and intent to kill.

Meanwhile, the Artemis II crew’s lunar journey has set a new record for distance traveled from Earth. During their 10-day mission, the four astronauts ventured farther than any humans in history, surpassing the Apollo 13 team’s previous mark of 248,655 miles (400,171km). Astronaut Christina Koch shared a heartfelt message after reestablishing communication:

“It is so great to hear from Earth again.”

The crew, who are currently orbiting the Moon’s far side, will not land on its surface this time but are preparing for future missions. Commander Reid Wiseman’s wife passed away from cancer in 2020 at the age of 46.

Back on Earth, a Tampa homeowner sparked a police response by discovering a nine-foot alligator in his pool area. Wildlife specialists swiftly removed the animal from the premises. In a separate event, over 15,000 marshmallows were dropped from a helicopter during the annual “Great Marshmallow Drop,” drawing crowds of children to collect them.

NASA’s first crewed Moon mission in half a century launched successfully from Florida, marking a significant milestone. The most powerful rocket ever built was witnessed by passengers on a commercial flight, while BBC Science Editor Rebecca Morelle observed the takeoff from just three miles away. After overcoming delays and technical challenges, the mission now orbits Earth, paving the way for the US’s goal of landing humans on the Moon by 2028.
