Subnautica 2 early access release date set for May after shock legal verdict
Subnautica 2 enters early access in May following legal resolution
After a series of setbacks, including staff reshuffles and legal disputes, the long-awaited sequel to Subnautica will debut in early access earlier than initially anticipated, landing in May 2026.
Original title and spin-off
The original Subnautica has become a standout survival title in recent years, immersing players in an alien oceanic world while navigating the challenges of survival and escape.
In 2021, a spin-off titled Subnautica: Below Zero was launched, originally intended as downloadable content before evolving into a direct sequel. This sequel promises cooperative gameplay for up to four players, expanding the series’ appeal.
Development challenges and leadership changes
Subnautica 2 had been slated for early access last year, but delays emerged due to a wave of staff dismissals and legal battles. The controversy peaked when Krafton, the parent company, terminated the leadership team of Unknown Worlds, including CEO Ted Gill and senior members Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire.
Steve Papoutsis, who previously led The Callisto Protocol developer Striking Distance, was appointed as the new CEO. His announcement confirmed the release in May 2026, highlighting the progress made: ‘Thanks to your dedication and talent, we’ve added more story chapters, built new creatures, and created new biomes along with many other features,’ he stated.
Legal dispute and court decision
‘With this significant progress, we have passed KRAFTON’s milestone review last week and are now ready to start our open development journey alongside our community. We have full confidence that we have reached a point where we can deliver an experience our players will love.’
Following the firings, the former executives filed a lawsuit, alleging Krafton had obstructed development to delay the game and prevent them from collecting a $250 million bonus tied to sales and content milestones. Krafton countered by stating the founders had ‘checked out,’ leading to the project’s slowdown.
Recently, a judge ruled in favor of the employees, ordering Krafton to reinstate Ted Gill as CEO and grant him full authority over Subnautica 2’s launch. The decision cited breaches of the EPA, with the court finding that Krafton had terminated Key Employees without valid cause and seized operational control improperly.
‘Today’s ruling does not resolve the former executives’ claim for damages or an earnout related to Subnautica 2, with further litigation still pending,’ Krafton added. ‘In the meantime, Krafton’s immediate focus remains unchanged: delivering the best possible game to Subnautica’s fans.’
As part of the settlement, Krafton was required to extend the deadline for the bonus conditions, potentially allowing the team to secure the $250 million reward in 2026.
