Man faces attempted murder charges in attack on home of OpenAI’s Sam Altman
Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Attack on OpenAI Founder’s Residence
Alleged Threats and Explosives Target AI Leader
A 20-year-old Texas man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following an incident where he hurled a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. The arraignment, set for Tuesday afternoon, will address state-level accusations against him. Simultaneously, federal authorities have charged Moreno-Gama with possession of an unregistered firearm and attempted destruction of property via explosives.
“Violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement, be it with politics or a technology or any other matter,” stated Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “These alleged actions – which damaged property and could well have taken lives – will be aggressively prosecuted.”
OpenAI expressed support for constructive debate in a statement, asserting, “to ensure society gets AI right, we need to work through the democratic process” and “we welcome a good faith debate.” However, the organization also condemned violence, noting that “there is no place in our democracy for violence against anyone, regardless of the AI lab they work at or side of the debate they belong to.” The specific address of the target home and the individual involved remained undisclosed by local and federal agencies.
According to federal prosecutors, Moreno-Gama ignited an exterior gate at Altman’s residence around 4:00 PM local time on Friday before fleeing on foot. Later that day, he allegedly attempted to set fire to OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters, which houses the ChatGPT project. Security personnel reported that he tried to use a chair to smash the building’s glass doors, per the criminal complaint. Authorities recovered incendiary devices, a kerosene jug, and a lighter from the suspect.
The documents found with Moreno-Gama detailed concerns about AI’s impact on humanity, including a section titled: “Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction.” These materials also claimed, “if I am going to advocate for others to kill and commit crimes, then I must lead by example and show that I am fully sincere in my message,” and listed names and addresses of AI company board members, CEOs, and investors.
Surveillance footage, included in the criminal complaint, captures Moreno-Gama at both locations. No injuries were reported in the attacks. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins highlighted the safety of Altman, his family, and employees during a Monday press conference, stating, “I’m grateful that Mr Altman, his family, and his employees were uninjured in these attacks and are safe.”
Earlier Monday, the FBI executed a Texas raid linked to the incident, as shared on X by Director Kash Patel. The event follows a recent New Yorker profile of Altman that raised questions about his leadership in the AI field. After the home attack, Altman referenced the “incendiary article about me” and urged, “we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally.” He later clarified his connection to the article on X after facing social media criticism.
OpenAI’s 2022 launch of ChatGPT ignited widespread public enthusiasm for AI chatbots, prompting significant financial investment in the sector. This surge has sparked skepticism among some investors and analysts. Readers outside the UK can sign up for the Tech Decoded newsletter to stay updated on global tech developments.
