Investigation finds ‘notorious cartel leaders’ living openly in Dubai
Notorious Cartel Leaders Unmasked in Dubai
A recent investigation by The Sunday Times and Bellingcat has revealed that Christy Kinahan and his son Daniel are residing openly in Dubai, despite being sought internationally and eligible for multimillion-dollar bounties. The pair’s presence was documented through photographs and video clips captured at a mixed martial arts gathering at the Coca-Cola Arena.
Open-Source Evidence Exposes Their Presence
Investigators used AI-driven facial recognition and public social media footage to trace the Kinahans. After identifying Daniel at the event, journalists accessed live-streamed video and applied digital analysis to confirm both men’s identities. The footage shows them appearing relaxed, with no visible attempts to hide their identities in public.
“If either man were anxious about potential arrest or deportation, they certainly did not display it,” the report noted.
The Kinahan Organised Crime Group, a transnational syndicate estimated at $1.1bn in value, is recognized as one of Ireland’s most influential criminal networks. Irish police claim the cartel is responsible for trafficking significant quantities of drugs from mainland Europe to the UK, establishing it as a major supplier in the region.
Christy Kinahan is described by US law enforcement as the core figure of the network, overseeing cocaine imports into Europe and operations spanning multiple continents. The cartel’s reach extends to Africa and Europe, as demonstrated by a September incident in Brazil where a light aircraft carrying 200kg of “SpaceX-branded” cocaine crashed, killing an Australian pilot.
Further evidence emerged from US court documents, which highlight the Drug Enforcement Administration’s involvement in an operation linked to the Kinahan family. This provided the first tangible proof of the group’s activities in North America, including trafficking of methamphetamine and fentanyl.
