Professor Rosalina Stancheva Christova of George Mason University’s aquatic ecology department confirms that the algae is non-toxic, belonging to the genus Desmodesmus. She notes that the pool’s shallow depth and lack of shade make it prone to algae growth, especially with rising temperatures. “The algae’s presence is a sign of the ecosystem adapting to new conditions,” Christova explains. “It’s a natural response to the recent infrastructure work.”
Renovation Context and Environmental Factors
The Trump administration’s renovation included draining the pool to update its infrastructure, a process that disrupted the water’s natural balance. This disruption, combined with the new blue coloration, may have contributed to the algae’s rapid growth. An Interior Department spokesperson cited residual materials in the water lines as a possible cause, stating they had been dormant for weeks before the refill. “The algae likely emerged from these sources and was intensified by the extreme heat in D.C. last week,” they added.
Christova points out that similar algae blooms have occurred after past renovations. In 2012, the pool had to be drained and recalibrated for ozone levels, and in 2019, crews removed four million gallons of water to address a broken line. These incidents suggest that the reflecting pool’s ecosystem is highly sensitive to changes. “The algae’s return is not surprising,” she says, “but it highlights the need for ongoing maintenance.”

Officials have adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle the algae issue. One method involves hydrogen peroxide, a gentler alternative to chlorine that’s safe for marine life. “It’s ideal for specialized uses like spas and natural pools,” the spokesperson explains. Another strategy is the use of nanobubble ozone technology, which introduces oxygen into the water to combat algae. While these methods are effective, experts emphasize that prevention is key to maintaining the pool’s clarity.
Goodale suggests that the pool’s design could be adjusted to reduce algae growth. “The blue surface absorbs more sunlight, heating the water and creating a breeding ground,” he notes. He recommends incorporating shading structures or modifying the surface material to mitigate future issues.
