Graham Platner Drops His Bid for Senate Amid Controversy

Graham Platner drops his bid for Senate after facing a serious allegation of sexual assault. The Maine political figure officially suspended his U.S. Senate campaign on Wednesday, bringing an abrupt end to a race defined by multiple controversies. Nearly all of his Democratic supporters had already distanced themselves from his candidacy following the assault claim. In a video message shared across social media, Platner explained that his decision was strategic rather than an admission of guilt.

The Assault Allegation and Response

The allegation emerged in a Politico report published on Monday. Jenny Racicot, who previously dated Platner, claims that he entered her residence in 2021 while intoxicated and without her consent, subsequently sexually assaulting her. Platner has firmly rejected the claim, stating that any suggestion of non-consensual conduct is entirely false. Racicot had been mentioned in an earlier New York Times piece alongside two other women who characterized Platner’s past behavior as unsettling, though she did not elaborate on the assault in that particular report. She has since spoken to CNN about her decision to come forward despite initial hesitation.

Before the Politico story, Democrats had largely remained loyal to Platner through a series of scandals. These included a chest tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, the deletion of offensive posts from Reddit, and revelations that he sent sexually explicit messages to women during his marriage. The political fallout was swift. Several prominent Democratic figures withdrew their endorsements, including Representative Ro Khanna, Senator Ruben Gallego, and Senator Elizabeth Warren. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, one of Platner’s earliest supporters, also pulled back his backing. The Maine Democratic Party formally requested that Platner exit the race.

The most significant blow came when the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm announced it would cease financial investment in the contest if Platner stayed on the ballot. For more than two days, Platner faced mounting pressure to step down quickly. State regulations require him to withdraw by Monday, July 13, allowing the state party to select a replacement before the July 27 deadline.

It is virtually impossible to see a path for Senate Democrats back to the majority if they do not flip Maine,

noted Jessica Taylor, Senate and Governors editor at Cook Political Report.

Democrats had viewed Maine as a potential pathway to reclaiming the Senate. The state voted for President Trump in 2024, and the party requires a net gain of four seats this November to secure control. Losing Maine would significantly complicate their strategy. On Wednesday, the Maine Democratic Party convened a meeting with over 100 members who voted to hold a nominating convention to select a new candidate if a vacancy arises.

There is an unprecedented amount of energy and enthusiasm among Maine Democrats, driven in part by many of the dedicated volunteers and supporters who were inspired by Graham Platner’s campaign. We look forward to coming together and harnessing that energy around our new nominee as we work to defeat Susan Collins in November,

the party stated in a formal announcement.

Competition to replace Platner has already begun. Potential candidates include Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Maine CDC director Nirav Shah, and ex-state Senate President Troy Jackson. An exploratory committee has filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on behalf of one of these contenders, signaling that the race for the Democratic nomination is far from over. As Graham Platner drops his bid for Senate, the party now turns its attention to finding a new champion for the upcoming election.
