The primary obstacle was his inability to obtain an appointment slot before his scheduled departure time. He expressed confidence that he would return during upcoming special passport acceptance events that the State Department has scheduled for future dates, specifically August 22 and September 26.
Opponents Find the Design Distressing
The Washington passport office traditionally serves U.S. citizens who can demonstrate they are traveling within a matter of days. Kim Zaninovich from Richmond, Virginia, found herself in this exact situation. After completing her application process, she emerged from the office expressing disappointment with the outcome.
“It was distressing to see President Trump’s image on the inside cover of my passport,” Zaninovich stated.
She particularly criticized the artistic representation of the President. Zaninovich described the illustration as showing Trump with closed fists positioned on a desk, with the Declaration of Independence and the American flag visible in the background. She characterized the facial expression as having “an angry look” that did not appeal to her sensibilities.
Zaninovich noted that she was not offered any alternative option to receive a standard passport without the Trump portrait. Her experience contrasted with that of another applicant named Ariel Baras, who was given the opportunity to choose and ultimately decided to accept the commemorative version, asking himself “why not?”
The Hidden Option for Those Who Prefer Standard Passports
Initial reports created some confusion regarding whether travelers had genuine flexibility in their passport selection. However, NPR investigation revealed a practical solution for applicants in Washington who wish to avoid the Trump-themed commemorative passport. The key lies in selecting extra pages during the application process.
According to official State Department guidance, the 250th anniversary commemorative passport is exclusively available in the standard format containing 28 pages. By requesting additional pages beyond the standard offering, applicants can effectively bypass the commemorative version and receive a traditional passport instead.
