British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again
At 17, Sky Brown, the British teen, has secured another skateboarding world championship title, following her previous victory at 14. Her latest triumph took place in Brazil, where she celebrated with her father, former skateboarder Stewart Brown.
“Feeling this win is monumental, and I’m deeply grateful,” Brown remarked, adding, “There are larger global issues, and I hope for peace across the world.”
The event in São Paulo, held on Sunday, faced delays caused by “adverse weather conditions and persistent rainfall.” After two of the four scheduled runs, officials opted to finalize results due to worsening conditions, which made the bowl unsafe for competitors.
Brown was declared the winner, holding nearly four points ahead at 88.16. Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa earned silver with 84.36, while American Minna Stess secured third place at 83.90. The British athlete now ranks 7th globally, with 15-year-old Hasegawa leading the standings.
Her journey to the top includes claiming the title at 14 during the World Championships in Sharjah, UAE, with a peak score of 90.83. Brown also holds the record as Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist, achieving bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games at 13. She added another bronze in the park event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, just days after dislocating her shoulder.
Born in Miyazaki, Japan, to her Japanese mother, Mieko, and British father, Stewart Brown, she began competing at the US Open in 2016 at eight years old. She first represented Great Britain in 2018, marking her debut on the international stage.
Skateboarding was introduced as an Olympic sport in 2020, featuring both “park” and “street” disciplines. The event in São Paulo underscored the sport’s growing global prominence, with Brown’s victory highlighting her continued dominance in the field.
