What Participants Are Creating

Each entrant—or group of entrants—must produce an audio file in which they discuss a topic of their own choosing. The finished piece must fall between three and eight minutes in duration. It must be created specifically for this contest, meaning no recycled material from prior projects qualifies. The work must also be original under copyright law: it cannot have been generated, in whole or in any material part, by artificial intelligence tools, including generative AI systems for image, text, audio, or design. Incidental use of software features that happen to include minor AI-assisted functionality—such as auto-cropping, spell-check, or color correction—is permitted.

Prizes and Recognition

Up to eight finalists will be selected from all eligible entries. Seven of those finalists receive a trophy along with NPR-branded merchandise valued at approximately $150. The single Grand Prize Winner goes further: their submission is featured across multiple NPR platforms, and they are awarded a trip to NPR Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the winning podcast will be discussed within a news segment on either All Things Considered or Morning Edition, two of the most widely heard long-form journalism programs in American radio.

Eligibility Requirements

The contest is open solely to United States residents who have reached their sixty-fifth birthday before submitting an entry. Entrants may collaborate with other eligible individuals; joint submissions are permitted provided every participant meets the age threshold at the time of entry.

Certain categories of people are excluded. Employees, representatives, agents, directors, and officers of NPR, its parent or subsidiary entities, affiliated companies, member stations, and any other parties involved in administering the contest cannot enter. Their immediate family members and anyone sharing their household are likewise ineligible.

No purchase or payment is required to enter or win. The contest is void where prohibited by law and subject to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Entry itself constitutes a certification that the participant satisfies every eligibility condition outlined in the rules, and NPR reserves the right to verify compliance, potentially requesting additional documentation.

Submission Guidelines

The audio file must meet several non-negotiable criteria:

Length: Between three and eight minutes. Purpose: Created specifically for this contest, not repurposed from another project. Authorship: The original work of the entrant(s). No AI generation: The submission must not be produced, in whole or in material part, by artificial intelligence tools. Minor software features with incidental AI components are acceptable.

Submissions must follow the procedural requirements laid out in Section 4 of the official rules to be considered valid. Entries that fail to comply will not advance to judging.

Timeline and Key Dates

The submission window opens at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time on August 16, 2026, and closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on November 30, 2026. Judges then review eligible entries during a period beginning December 1, 2026, and concluding on or about January 15, 2027. Up to two panels of judges, selected at the sole discretion of the sponsor, evaluate submissions in accordance with the criteria set forth in Section 5 of the rules.

NPR will attempt to contact each finalist and the Grand Prize Winner—or an alternate if necessary—on or about January 15, 2027. The finalists and overall winner are publicly announced on or about February 1, 2027.

Sponsor and Administrative Details

The contest is sponsored by National Public Radio, Inc., a nonprofit corporation organized under District of Columbia law with principal offices at 1111 North Capitol Street NE, Washington, DC 20002. All decisions regarding the contest—including judging outcomes, eligibility determinations, and prize fulfillment—are final and binding.
