The earthquake’s epicenter sat 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende, the provincial capital of East Nusa Tenggara, at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers. This proximity to the surface amplified the shaking’s intensity, causing buildings to collapse and infrastructure to crumble throughout the earthquake-prone area.

Tsunami Threat Emerges and Subsides

Coastal communities immediately received warnings to evacuate to higher ground as authorities feared a devastating tsunami. Indonesia’s meteorological and geophysical agency monitored sea levels closely before eventually lifting the alert, noting that no significant ocean-level changes threatened coastal populations. Nevertheless, several small tsunamis did make landfall across the region.

Video footage captured the coastal village of Riung in Ngada regency completely blanketed in mud and debris following a 1.61-meter tsunami wave. Stranded fishing boats and damaged homes surrounded by sediment marked the aftermath of the receding waters.

Additional wave measurements recorded 0.94 meters in Maurole within Ende Regency, while tsunami waves exceeding 0.5 meters appeared in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, and Sape in Bima Regency. These smaller waves, though not catastrophic, caused considerable disruption to coastal life and fishing operations.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Challenges

Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Management Agency, confirmed that rescuers had recovered at least 47 bodies, primarily from Sikka, Manggarai, and East Manggarai regencies. Medical facilities received at least 50 injured survivors. The earthquake flattened 157 houses and damaged nearly 200 additional structures, displacing approximately 2,000 villagers who sought refuge in temporary shelters.

Public infrastructure suffered heavily, with more than 100 facilities destroyed. Schools, medical centers, and churches all sustained significant damage. Communication problems further complicated rescue operations, as power outages prevented timely information flow between cities and villages.

We are continuing to collect reports of damage and casualties, but there are communication disruptions, said East Nusa Tenggara Police Chief Rudi Darmoko. He noted that quake-triggered landslides in Ende regency blocked the Trans-Flores highway, a 700-kilometer paved mountain road connecting Labuan Bajo to Larantuka.

Seismic Activity Continues

The meteorological agency documented at least 235 aftershocks following the main earthquake, with the strongest registering at magnitude 6.2. The persistent tremors kept residents on edge and hampered rescue efforts in damaged areas.

Meanwhile, a separate but powerful earthquake struck North Sumatra province on Saturday afternoon. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded this 6.9 magnitude event at a depth of 172.5 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. Indonesian authorities noted that this deeper earthquake caused minimal damage and few casualties due to its substantial depth.

Remote Villages Cut Off

Fathur Rahman, who leads the Search and Rescue Office in Maumere, warned that the death toll could climb significantly. Landslides triggered by the earthquake buried or isolated numerous remote villages across six regencies on Flores Island. Some communities remain completely buried, while damaged roads and insufficient heavy equipment slow rescue operations.

Many buildings here were damaged. I saw that the waiting room at the port terminal in Maumere had collapsed, said Yohanna Embu, a resident who witnessed the panic as people ran toward higher ground.

Religious institutions also suffered. The Rev. Guidelbertus Tanga, rector of St. Peter Major Seminary, reported that students and nuns fled in terror when the assembly hall’s roof collapsed during morning Mass. At least one priest broke his leg jumping from a second-floor window.

Emergency Response Mobilized

Authorities deployed three helicopters and a rescue vessel to support logistics and potential evacuations. East Nusa Tenggara’s island geography presents ongoing transportation challenges, making aerial and maritime support essential for reaching isolated communities.

The earthquake’s impact extended across much of Flores Island, with initial assessments indicating heavy damage throughout the region. As rescue teams work through damaged infrastructure and communication networks, officials remain concerned about the possibility of additional casualties in buried or cut-off villages.
